Musings from an Old Dog
For 13 years I've been out of the public school realm. After teaching in public schools for 12 years, I took time off with the birth of my first daughter and never went back. Well, I never went back to public school. I've spent the last 7 years teaching in a small private school. It was a series of unexpected events that landed me there, but I love it. I have small classes and educational freedom. I am able to develop long term relationships with students and watch them grow intellectually and spiritually. What's the problem? Money. Suddenly, I am a single mom with two daughters, and my sweet private school job pays less than half of what I would be making in public school.
So I find myself feeling like and the old dog trying to learn new Common Core tricks. I start graduate school this summer, and my head is spinning as I try to decipher the new lingo. I hope this blog will help me sort out my thoughts, fears, and ambitions. Where do I begin?
